Reflecting on 2+ years of the China EVs & More podcast

As they say, time flies when you are having fun.

May 20 marked a big milestone for the China EVs & More podcast: it was exactly two years ago on May 20, 2021 that the first episode of the podcast was pushed out to the global audience.

(Trivia: May 20 in China is also the “520” or “I Love You” day in China because “520” pronounced in Chinese “wu er ling” sounds like “wo ai ni” which is “I Love You.” So we love all of you the fans and listeners of the podcast!)

And after two years, 120 episodes (including 16 MAX episodes with special guests), 22,000+ downloads, at least 120 hours or 7,200 minutes of content with listeners spanning nearly 100 countries and 1,900 cities, we can safely say: the China EVs & More podcast has gone truly global, if not influential.

My co-host Tu Le of Sino Auto Insights and I certainly have had a lot of fun opining about the “most important and interesting news coming out of the China EV, AV and mobility sectors” on a weekly basis for the better part of the last 2+ years.

It has certainly become a weekly ritual, as we say. And we’ve only missed this ritual three times over that period: Chinese New Year 2022, Chinese New Year 2023 and Auto Shanghai 2023.

Tu had this to say about the milestone in his latest newsletter (if you haven’t signed up for it, make sure to do so at sinoautoinsights.com, it’s one of the best newsletters on the planet focused on China EVs):

Not HUGE numbers but these stats are just mindboggling to me — that we can reach such a diverse audience which has grown significantly since the first live episode on clubhouse. This is one of the truly global podcasts about the EV / AV / battery / chip / mobility sectors because who are we kidding, if you want to know about any of those, it starts and ends with what China, the U.S. and Europe are doing in the space.

We pride ourselves on being the two best resources for all of the above and it seems like a lot of the world agrees. Thanks to our loyal listeners, and there are many. We are back in the lab looking for new MAX episode guests as well as new ways to present you this content so stay tuned for bigger and better things from us!

The short history of the podcast is that Tu came to me with the idea in the Fall of 2020 after both of us appeared on a virtual industry panel discussing the Beijing Auto Show that year, and we began hosting shows on Clubhouse when it was a thing in February 2021, eventually moving to Twitter Spaces where live shows are held, recorded, and then edited and pushed out on all the relevant podcast platforms.

The rest is history, as they say.

Over recent weeks and months, the world seemed to have finally woken up to China EV Inc., China AV Inc., China Battery Inc., China Mobility Inc., China Tech Inc., China Chip Inc., what have you, as the global mainstream media have had much more coverage on these topics and CEOs of major global foreign automakers and suppliers have visited China, felt that “shock” and become more vocal about the BYDs, NIOs and Geelys. Both of us are getting more and more requests from these media to offer commentaries as things evolve at a fast and furious pace.

The China EVs & More podcast is the only English language podcast out there dedicated to the China EV, AV, battery and mobility sectors with both a China-centric and a global perspective from two of the most knowledgeable experts out there. Between the two of us, we probably have 40+ years of either having covered the industry or worked in it on the ground. We know both the Chinese and western culture, have lived in China and the U.S. for extended period of time, we know what’s going on in the EV space both inside and outside of China, and we have our industry contacts and resources accumulated over those 40+ years at our disposal to provide unrivaled perspectives.

Our mission for the podcast simply is to inform and educate our global audience about the ins and outs of China’s EV, AV, battery and mobility sectors with independent, fair and objective views. We give credit where it’s due and criticize when it’s warranted. We praise companies, but we also dunk on companies, and we debunk misconceptions.

If what we have done over the last two years have played even a small part in waking up the world on China EVs, then it’s all worth it.

Thank you for the loyal fans and listeners that have supported us, thank you to the people that have offered advice and suggestions, and thank you for all the guests that have appeared on our podcast. We could not have done this with all of your support. As Tu said, stay tuned for new ways we are going to present content.
